Understanding QRIS
QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) is a unified QR code payment standard launched by Bank Indonesia in 2019. Before QRIS, each e-wallet had its own QR code — merchants needed separate stickers for GoPay, OVO, DANA, LinkAja, and others. QRIS solved this by creating a single QR code that works across all licensed payment apps.
How QRIS Works
The concept is elegantly simple:
- A merchant registers for QRIS through their bank or payment service provider.
- They receive a single QRIS sticker or display code.
- A customer opens any compatible payment app (GoPay, OVO, DANA, ShopeePay, mobile banking, etc.).
- The customer scans the QR code using the app's scan feature.
- The payment is processed and both parties receive instant confirmation.
Types of QRIS
Static QRIS
The most common type — a fixed QR code printed on a sticker or display. The customer enters the payment amount manually. Perfect for small merchants, food stalls, and parking lots.
Dynamic QRIS
Generated per transaction, usually by a POS system or digital cashier. The amount is pre-filled, reducing errors. Common in supermarkets, restaurants, and larger businesses.
QRIS TTM (Tanpa Tatap Muka)
Used for remote or contactless payments — for example, in vending machines or self-service kiosks where physical interaction is limited.
Apps Compatible with QRIS
- GoPay
- OVO
- DANA
- ShopeePay
- LinkAja
- Mobile banking apps (BCA, Mandiri, BRI, BNI, and others)
- Any Bank Indonesia-licensed payment app
Transaction Limits
As of current Bank Indonesia regulations, QRIS transactions are capped at Rp 10,000,000 per transaction for standard users. This limit applies across all compatible apps and is designed to balance convenience with financial security.
Benefits of QRIS
| Benefit | For Consumers | For Merchants |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | One scan from any app | One QR code for all customers |
| Speed | Instant payment confirmation | Real-time settlement tracking |
| Cost | No extra fees for users | Low MDR (0.3% for most merchants) |
| Hygiene | No cash handling | Less cash management needed |
QRIS for Travelers in Indonesia
If you're visiting Indonesia, QRIS is extremely useful — many tourist areas, markets, and transport hubs accept it. Some international visitors can also use QRIS through linked international apps as Bank Indonesia expands cross-border QRIS connectivity with neighboring countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.
QRIS represents a significant step toward a more inclusive and efficient cashless economy in Indonesia. With virtually every legitimate payment app supporting it, there's little reason not to use it for your daily transactions.
